Adhesiolysis is a surgical procedure, usually performed by laparoscopy, to cut and separate adhesions, which are bands of scar tissue that can form between the uterus, tubes, ovaries and surrounding structures after infection, surgery or endometriosis. Adhesions can distort pelvic anatomy and interfere with how the fallopian tubes pick up an egg. Adhesiolysis aims to restore more normal pelvic anatomy and improve the chance of natural conception in selected cases, although adhesions can sometimes re-form after surgery. Whether it is worthwhile compared with proceeding directly to IVF depends on the extent of adhesions and other fertility factors, and is discussed individually with a specialist.
