The corpus luteum forms from the ruptured follicle after ovulation and produces progesterone, which sustains the uterine lining through the luteal phase. If pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum continues producing progesterone in early pregnancy until the placenta takes over this role, usually by around eight to ten weeks. If pregnancy does not occur, it regresses and progesterone falls, triggering the next period.
