Embryo storage refers to keeping vitrified embryos at very low temperature in a registered ART clinic or ART bank until they are used, donated where permitted, or the storage arrangement ends in line with consent. Clinics typically charge a recurring storage fee to cover the cost of maintaining this storage, and will contact patients periodically about renewing consent and payment. Decisions about how long to store embryos, and what happens to them if storage lapses or contact is lost, are governed by the consent documents signed with the clinic and by the requirements of the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021 and its Rules.
