An endometrial biopsy involves taking a small sample of tissue from the uterine lining (endometrium) using a thin catheter passed through the cervix, usually as an outpatient procedure with minimal or no anaesthesia. It can cause brief cramping. In fertility care, an endometrial biopsy may be used to investigate suspected chronic endometritis, unexplained implantation failure, or, less commonly, to assess endometrial receptivity before a frozen embryo transfer. The sample is examined in a laboratory, and results guide any further treatment before proceeding with embryo transfer.
