Hydrocele

A hydrocele is a collection of fluid in the sac surrounding the testis, causing a soft, usually painless scrotal swelling. It can occur on its own or alongside other conditions such as infection, inflammation or, rarely, an underlying testicular problem, so a doctor will usually examine and sometimes scan the scrotum to check the testis itself. A hydrocele by itself does not usually affect sperm production or fertility, though a very large hydrocele can occasionally make examination or ultrasound assessment of the testis more difficult. Treatment, if needed, is usually surgical and is generally straightforward.
