Myomectomy

Surgery to remove uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus.

Female fertility

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids while keeping the uterus intact, allowing for a future pregnancy. The approach depends on the fibroid's size, number and location: a hysteroscopic myomectomy removes fibroids projecting into the uterine cavity (submucosal fibroids) using instruments passed through the cervix, while a laparoscopic or open myomectomy is used for fibroids within or on the outer wall of the uterus. Myomectomy is generally recommended when fibroids are thought to be affecting fertility or pregnancy, for example by distorting the uterine cavity. Recovery time and any advice on delaying pregnancy afterwards depend on the surgical approach and how deeply the uterine wall was involved, and should be discussed with the treating surgeon.

Also known as: hysteroscopic myomectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, fibroid removal surgery
