Pelvic abscess

A pelvic abscess is a collection of pus that can develop in the pelvis, rarely following procedures such as egg retrieval, particularly where there is an existing risk factor such as endometriosis, a hydrosalpinx or a prior pelvic infection. It represents a more advanced stage of pelvic infection and generally needs more intensive treatment than a straightforward infection. Symptoms can include persistent fever, worsening or severe pelvic pain, and feeling increasingly unwell; these require urgent assessment, so anyone with these symptoms after fertility treatment should contact their clinic immediately or attend the nearest hospital emergency department. Diagnosis is usually made with ultrasound or other imaging, and treatment may involve drainage of the abscess in addition to other management decided by the treating specialists. Because a pelvic abscess can affect future fertility and treatment planning, anyone who has had one should discuss its implications for further fertility treatment with their clinic once recovered.
