Pelvic adhesions

Pelvic adhesions are scar tissue bands that can form between the uterus, tubes, ovaries and bowel after infection, endometriosis, appendicitis, or previous pelvic surgery. They can distort anatomy, restrict the fimbrial end of the tube from reaching a released egg, and reduce fertility even when the tube itself is open. Adhesions are usually diagnosed and assessed during laparoscopy, and are sometimes divided (adhesiolysis) during the same procedure, although adhesions can re-form after surgery.
