Salpingectomy is the surgical removal of one or both fallopian tubes, most often performed by laparoscopy. In fertility care, it is commonly recommended when a tube is affected by hydrosalpinx, where fluid trapped in a blocked, damaged tube can leak into the uterine cavity and reduce the chance of successful implantation during IVF. Removing a hydrosalpinx-affected tube before IVF has been shown to improve treatment outcomes in this situation. When both tubes are removed, natural conception is no longer possible and IVF becomes the route to pregnancy, since fertilisation and egg transport through the tubes are bypassed.
