Sharps container and safe disposal

A sharps container is a puncture-resistant box designed to safely collect used needles, syringes and injection pen needles after fertility injections, to protect household members, waste workers and the environment from needle-stick injury and infection risk. Clinics and pharmacies in India typically supply or advise on an appropriate sharps container when dispensing injectable fertility medicines. Full sharps containers should be returned to the dispensing pharmacy, clinic, or a local facility that accepts biomedical waste, following the disposal arrangements advised by the treating clinic; they should never be placed in regular household rubbish or thrown into open drains or public spaces. Needles should not be recapped, bent or removed by hand before disposal. Biomedical waste, including sharps generated at home during fertility treatment, is subject to India's biomedical waste management rules, and patients should follow the specific local disposal route recommended by their clinic or pharmacist.
