A submucosal fibroid grows just beneath the lining of the uterus and bulges into the uterine cavity. Because of its location, this type of fibroid is most strongly linked to reduced fertility, difficulty with implantation, and heavy menstrual bleeding compared with fibroids elsewhere in the uterus. Submucosal fibroids can often be removed using hysteroscopy, a procedure performed through the vagina and cervix without external incisions, and removal is frequently recommended before fertility treatment when a submucosal fibroid is distorting the uterine cavity.
Also known as: submucous fibroid, cavity-distorting fibroid
