Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection that progresses through stages if untreated, and can be passed to a baby during pregnancy, causing serious complications. It is part of standard screening before fertility treatment in India. Syphilis is diagnosed with a blood test and is curable with antibiotics; both partners are usually tested, and treatment before or during pregnancy substantially reduces the risk to a future baby.
