In South Africa most fertility treatment happens in private care, funded through a medical scheme or paid for directly.
Medical schemes
Scheme cover for assisted reproduction is limited and depends on your plan and benefit rules. Ask your scheme in writing which investigations, medicines and procedures are covered.
Private self-payment
Anything not covered is paid to the clinic directly. Request an itemised quote covering consultations, medication, laboratory work, freezing and storage.
Public sector care
A small number of public hospitals provide fertility services, usually with their own referral and assessment criteria. Your doctor can advise what is available in your province.
