Treatment is provided by private fertility clinics in Adelaide, with consulting in regional centres. A GP referral to a fertility specialist is the usual starting point.
How ART is regulated
Legislation: Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 1988 (SA)
ART is regulated under the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 1988, as amended — including amendments that established the state Donor Conception Register and addressed posthumous use of reproductive material.
Oversight: SA Health administers the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 1988 and licenses providers. Clinical accreditation is through RTAC.
Donor conception
Statutory donor-conception register operating
- The South Australian Donor Conception Register began operating on 7 November 2021 under amendments to the ART Act.
- The register allows donor-conceived people, donors and certain relatives to apply for information, subject to the rules in the Act.

Surrogacy
Legislation: Surrogacy Act 2019 (SA)
- Only altruistic surrogacy is lawful; commercial surrogacy is prohibited.
- Independent legal advice and counselling are required, and a court order transfers parentage after the birth.

State rebate towards treatment costs
- South Australia introduced a fertility treatment rebate from 1 July 2026 — the state's first.
- As published, it provides $2,000 per IVF cycle for up to two cycles, alongside a separate rebate towards pre-treatment fertility testing, in addition to Medicare rebates.
- Eligibility criteria and the application route are set by the South Australian Government. Confirm the current terms before relying on them.
