Fragile X syndrome is a common inherited cause of intellectual disability. Female premutation carriers may pass on a full expansion to a child, and are also at increased risk of primary ovarian insufficiency. Carrier screening for fragile X attracts a Medicare rebate in Australia as part of the three-condition panel.
