Laparoscopy is performed under general anaesthetic through small abdominal incisions. It is the definitive way to diagnose endometriosis and adhesions and can treat them in the same operation. It is no longer routine in fertility assessment; it is used when symptoms or imaging suggest disease that would change treatment.
