After ovulation the corpus luteum produces progesterone, which makes the endometrium receptive to an embryo. The luteal phase is usually 12 to 14 days; a consistently short phase can be a sign of poor ovulation rather than a separate disease. In IVF and frozen transfer cycles this phase is supported with progesterone medication.
