Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the endometrium grows into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium), causing the uterus to enlarge and often leading to heavy or painful periods. It can occur alongside endometriosis or fibroids, and is diagnosed using ultrasound or MRI, showing typical changes in the uterine wall. Adenomyosis has been linked in some studies to reduced implantation and higher miscarriage rates, though evidence on the best fertility treatment approach is still developing. Management options range from pain relief and hormonal treatment to surgery in selected cases, chosen based on symptoms and fertility goals.
