Cryopreservation is the general term for freezing and storing biological material, such as eggs, sperm or embryos, at very low temperature so that it can be thawed or warmed and used later. In Indian fertility treatment, cryopreservation is most commonly performed by vitrification, an ultra-rapid freezing method. Storage of cryopreserved material by a registered ART clinic or ART bank is governed by the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021 and its Rules, including requirements around consent and storage duration.
