Sperm freezing (sperm cryopreservation) preserves sperm from an ejaculated or surgically retrieved sample for later use in IUI, IVF or ICSI. It is commonly recommended before treatments that may affect sperm production (such as chemotherapy or some surgeries), before vasectomy, or when there is difficulty producing a fresh sample on the day of treatment. Sperm survive freezing and thawing well, though motility may fall slightly after thaw; the sample is usually tested after freezing to check suitability for future use. In India, sperm freezing and storage take place through ART clinics and ART banks registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021, with defined consent and storage-duration rules.
