Donor sperm comes from a man who has been medically and genetically screened and recruited through an ART bank registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021. It is used in IUI or IVF/ICSI when a person or couple cannot use their own sperm — for example, azoospermia not amenable to retrieval, a genetic condition, or where there is no male partner. Donor sperm samples are quarantined and re-tested for infections before release, consistent with Indian screening requirements, and donor identity is handled confidentially by the ART bank. Eligibility rules govern how many times a donor's sperm may be used across recipients.
