Fertility preservation

Freezing eggs, sperm, embryos or ovarian tissue to protect the chance of a future biological child.

Fertility preservation

Fertility preservation covers a group of techniques — egg freezing, sperm freezing, embryo cryopreservation and, less commonly, ovarian tissue cryopreservation — used when future fertility may be reduced by medical treatment, a medical condition, or age-related decline. In India, these procedures are provided through ART clinics and ART banks registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021, and storage, consent and use of gametes/embryos follow that framework. Preservation improves the chance of having a genetically related child later but does not guarantee a future pregnancy or a healthy baby; outcomes depend on the number and quality of eggs, sperm or embryos frozen, age at freezing, and later fertility factors.
