Oncofertility refers to counselling and preservation options offered to people about to start cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy or certain surgeries) that may affect future fertility. Where time and health permit, options may include egg freezing, sperm freezing, embryo freezing or, rarely, ovarian tissue freezing, discussed jointly by the oncology and fertility teams before gonadotoxic treatment begins. In India, oncofertility referral pathways are still developing in many centres, so patients are encouraged to ask their oncologist early about referral to a registered ART clinic. Preservation before cancer treatment cannot guarantee a future child but can widen options later.
