Ejaculatory duct obstruction is a blockage of the short ducts where the vas deferens and seminal vesicles join and empty into the urethra. It can be present from birth, for example due to a cyst, or acquired from infection, inflammation or scarring, and typically causes a low semen volume with low or absent sperm count despite normal sperm production in the testis. It is usually diagnosed with transrectal ultrasound and sometimes MRI, and can be one cause of obstructive azoospermia. Depending on the findings, treatment options include a surgical procedure to relieve the obstruction or, if that is not suitable or successful, surgical sperm retrieval for use with ICSI.
