Semen volume is the total quantity of fluid in an ejaculate, measured in millilitres, and mostly comes from the seminal vesicles and prostate rather than the testes. A low volume can occur with short abstinence, incomplete sample collection, retrograde ejaculation, partial blockage of the ejaculatory ducts, or hormonal causes, while an unusually high volume is less commonly significant. Volume is considered together with sperm concentration to calculate total sperm count, so an apparently low count with a low volume sample may reflect a collection issue rather than reduced sperm production.
