A semen analysis is usually the first test in male fertility evaluation. It measures how much semen is produced, how many sperm are present, how well they move (motility) and what proportion have a typical shape (morphology), along with liquefaction, viscosity and other features. Laboratories in India generally compare results with World Health Organization reference values, since specific Indian reference ranges are not separately published. A single low or borderline result is common and does not by itself confirm a fertility problem; doctors usually recommend repeating the test after a gap of some weeks, following the standard collection instructions, before drawing conclusions.
