Sperm concentration is the number of sperm per millilitre of semen, one of the core measurements on a semen analysis. It is considered alongside total sperm count, motility and morphology rather than in isolation, since fertility potential depends on the overall pattern of results. A concentration below the World Health Organization reference range is called oligozoospermia and can have many causes, including hormonal imbalance, varicocele, infection, genetic factors or lifestyle influences; sometimes no cause is found. Repeat testing is usually advised before further evaluation because concentration can vary between samples.
