Excessive ovarian response

A larger than expected number of follicles growing during ovarian stimulation.

IVF treatment

An excessive ovarian response occurs when a much larger number of follicles than expected grow during ovarian stimulation for IVF, often in women with PCOS, polycystic ovarian morphology, or a high AMH level. While it can mean more eggs are collected, it also raises the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). To reduce this risk, the treating team may lower medicine doses, change the trigger injection type, or recommend freezing all embryos for later transfer instead of a fresh embryo transfer, allowing the ovaries time to settle before pregnancy.

Also known as: high responder
