Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

A common hormonal condition causing irregular ovulation, and often excess androgens and polycystic-appearing ovaries.

Female fertility

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition affecting ovulation. It is usually diagnosed when at least two of three features are present: irregular or absent periods due to infrequent ovulation, clinical or blood-test evidence of raised androgens, and polycystic-appearing ovaries on ultrasound, once other causes are excluded. PCOS is strongly linked to anovulatory infertility, but many women with PCOS conceive with lifestyle measures, ovulation induction, or other fertility treatment. It is also associated with insulin resistance and long-term metabolic risk, so care in India typically includes weight and lifestyle guidance alongside fertility-specific treatment. "PCOS" is the internationally preferred clinical term. "PCOD" (polycystic ovarian disease) is an older label still very widely used and searched in India and is often used loosely to mean the same thing, though some clinicians distinguish it as a milder ovarian finding without the full metabolic syndrome. Ask your clinician which term applies to your situation.

Also known as: PCOD, polycystic ovarian disease, polycystic ovaries, PCOS/PCOD
