Ovulation induction is the use of fertility medicines to stimulate the ovaries to produce and release a mature egg, most commonly used in women who ovulate irregularly or not at all, such as in PCOS. It can be used on its own with timed intercourse, or combined with IUI. Common first-line medicines used in India include letrozole and clomiphene citrate, with gonadotropin injections used in some cases under close monitoring. Treatment is individualised by the treating specialist and involves ultrasound tracking of follicle growth to judge response and timing, and to reduce the risk of too many follicles developing at once (which raises the risk of a multiple pregnancy or, rarely, OHSS).
