Hirsutism is excess coarse, dark hair growth in areas such as the face, chest, and lower abdomen in women, following a pattern more typical of male hair growth. It usually reflects raised androgen levels or increased sensitivity to normal androgen levels, and is one of the features used in diagnosing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Other causes of raised androgens should be considered by a clinician before attributing hirsutism to PCOS alone. Treatment approaches depend on whether fertility is an immediate goal.
Also known as: excess hair growth, male-pattern hair growth
