Fertility is the capacity to conceive a child through natural intercourse. It depends on regular ovulation, healthy sperm, open fallopian tubes, a receptive uterus and successful implantation. Fertility naturally declines with age, more markedly for women after the mid-30s, but many factors — hormonal, structural, infective and lifestyle — can affect it at any age. In India, couples are generally advised to seek a fertility evaluation after one year of regular unprotected intercourse without conception, or after six months if the woman is over 35.
