Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system defined as failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected intercourse. It affects both partners equally as a possible cause, and evaluation is recommended for the couple together, not one partner alone. Earlier evaluation (after six months) is advised if the woman is over 35, or sooner if there is a known risk factor such as irregular periods, prior pelvic infection or surgery. Infertility is described as primary (no prior pregnancy) or secondary (infertility after a previous pregnancy, live birth or miscarriage). It is a medical condition, not a personal failing, and Indian fertility clinics registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021 offer structured evaluation and treatment pathways.
