Follicular monitoring involves a series of transvaginal ultrasound scans, sometimes combined with blood hormone tests, to track how follicles are growing over the course of a natural or medicated cycle. It is used in timed intercourse, IUI and IVF cycles. Scans are usually done every few days as the cycle progresses, allowing the treating team to adjust medicine doses, decide on the timing of a trigger injection, and plan ovulation, insemination or egg retrieval. Regular monitoring reduces the risk of complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation and helps confirm the response to fertility medicines.
