A transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) is a scan performed by placing a thin, covered ultrasound probe gently into the vagina, giving a clearer and more detailed view of the uterus, endometrium, ovaries and follicles than an abdominal scan. It is a routine, generally well-tolerated procedure in fertility assessment and treatment. TVS is used to assess ovarian reserve through antral follicle count, monitor follicle growth during treatment, check endometrial thickness before embryo transfer, and detect conditions such as fibroids, cysts or endometriomas. It does not use radiation and can usually be performed at any point in the menstrual cycle depending on the reason for the scan.
