Gonadotropins are hormones that act directly on the gonads (ovaries or testes) to stimulate egg or sperm production; FSH and LH are the body's natural gonadotropins, released by the pituitary gland. "Gonadotropin" is also used clinically for injectable fertility medicines containing FSH, LH or hCG-like activity, used to stimulate the ovaries during ovulation induction or IVF, or occasionally to stimulate sperm production in certain forms of male infertility. These medicines require monitoring and are prescribed and adjusted by a fertility specialist.
