Luteinising hormone (LH) is produced by the pituitary gland. A sharp rise — the LH surge — triggers the final maturation and release of the egg at ovulation, roughly 24–36 hours later. Home ovulation predictor kits detect this surge in urine to help time intercourse or insemination. A persistently raised LH, particularly relative to FSH, can be seen in PCOS. In men, LH stimulates testosterone production and is checked alongside FSH when investigating low sperm counts or suspected hormonal causes of infertility.
