Health insurance for fertility care in India

How Indian health insurance policies do or do not cover fertility investigations and treatment.

Costs & access

Health insurance coverage for fertility treatment varies by policy and insurer in India, and is regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). Some policies exclude infertility treatment altogether, some cover only the diagnostic investigations that lead to a fertility diagnosis, and a smaller number of policies or employer group schemes may cover part of ART treatment; terms differ between insurers and cannot be assumed. If you plan to make a claim, ask your insurer directly, in writing, whether IVF, IUI, ICSI, fertility medicines, and related investigations are covered, what pre-authorisation is required before treatment starts, and what documentation is needed for reimbursement after treatment. Pre-authorisation and reimbursement processes and timelines differ between insurers, so confirm the specific steps for your policy before committing to a treatment date. Do not assume that a policy that covers general hospitalisation also covers fertility treatment; read the policy wording and exclusions carefully, and keep all invoices and reports in case they are needed for a claim.
