Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an X-ray procedure in which a contrast dye is passed through the cervix into the uterus and fallopian tubes to check whether the tubes are open and to assess the shape of the uterine cavity. It is usually done in the first half of the menstrual cycle, after bleeding has stopped and before ovulation. The test can show tubal blockage, hydrosalpinx, or uterine abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps or a septum. Mild cramping during the procedure is common, and some women are given pain relief beforehand. HSG remains one of the standard first-line tests for tubal patency in the Indian fertility work-up, alongside options such as saline infusion sonography or laparoscopy with chromopertubation when more detail is needed.
