Intermenstrual bleeding is bleeding or spotting that occurs between expected menstrual periods. Possible causes include endometrial polyps, cervical causes, hormonal fluctuation around ovulation, or, less commonly, more serious conditions that need to be excluded. Because causes range from minor to conditions requiring prompt treatment, intermenstrual bleeding, especially if new, persistent, or associated with pain, should be assessed by a clinician rather than monitored alone.
