Iron and iron-deficiency anaemia

Iron is needed for healthy blood; deficiency (anaemia) is common in India and worth checking before conception.

Lifestyle & preconception

Iron is essential for making haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Iron-deficiency anaemia — low haemoglobin due to insufficient iron — is common in India, particularly among women, and can affect general health and pregnancy outcomes if uncorrected. Screening for anaemia is often part of preconception and fertility work-up. Symptoms of anaemia can include tiredness, breathlessness, and pallor, but many people have no obvious symptoms and are identified only through a blood test. Iron supplementation, where needed, should be guided by a blood test and your doctor's advice rather than started on your own, since taking iron without a confirmed deficiency is not recommended.

Also known as: anaemia, haemoglobin deficiency, low haemoglobin
