Progesterone for luteal support

Progesterone for luteal support is a hormone medicine used after egg retrieval and around embryo transfer to help maintain the uterine lining (endometrium) and support early pregnancy if implantation occurs. It replaces or supplements progesterone that would normally be produced by the ovary after ovulation, which can be reduced after IVF stimulation. Progesterone support may be given as vaginal progesterone (gel, tablet or pessary) or as an intramuscular injection, among other routes; the choice depends on clinic protocol, availability and patient factors. The treating clinic decides the form, timing and duration, and any change should be discussed with them rather than self-managed. Progesterone support does not guarantee implantation or an ongoing pregnancy. These medicines are prescription-only in India and regulated by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
