Menopause and perimenopause

The natural, permanent end of periods and the transition years leading up to it.

Female fertility

Menopause is the natural, permanent end of menstrual periods, confirmed after twelve months without a period, usually occurring around the late 40s to early 50s in Indian women. Perimenopause is the transitional phase beforehand, often lasting several years, marked by irregular cycles and fluctuating hormone levels as ovarian reserve declines. Fertility falls sharply during perimenopause because both the number and quality of remaining eggs decrease. Symptoms can include irregular bleeding, hot flushes and mood changes. Women trying to conceive during perimenopause are usually advised not to delay seeking specialist assessment, since natural conception chances reduce quickly in this phase.

Also known as: perimenopause, menopausal transition
