No eggs retrieved describes an outcome where the egg retrieval procedure does not yield any eggs, despite follicles having been seen on ultrasound during monitoring. This can happen for several reasons, including empty follicle syndrome, premature ovulation before retrieval, or a very poor ovarian response where follicles seen were not mature enough to contain a retrievable egg. A related but distinct outcome is retrieving eggs that turn out not to be mature enough to fertilise (no mature eggs), which can occur even when some eggs are collected. Both outcomes are understandably distressing, and the treating fertility team reviews the cycle details to discuss what, if anything, might be adjusted for a future attempt, while being clear that a cause is not always identifiable.
