Premature ovulation refers to ovulation occurring earlier than intended during a stimulated IVF or IUI cycle, typically because of an early LH surge that is not adequately controlled by the medicines used in the protocol. In IVF, this can mean eggs are released into the pelvis before the planned retrieval, so they cannot be collected for that cycle. Monitoring during stimulation, along with protocol choices such as antagonist medicines, is aimed at reducing this risk, but it can still occur occasionally. If premature ovulation is identified, the treating team may adjust the retrieval timing where possible, or the cycle may need to be cancelled, with the approach reviewed for any future attempt.
Also known as: early ovulation during IVF, premature LH surge
