Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland and normally rises during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support milk production. Outside of these situations, a persistently raised prolactin level (hyperprolactinaemia) can suppress FSH and LH, leading to irregular or absent ovulation and, in men, reduced testosterone and sperm production. Common causes include a pituitary microadenoma, hypothyroidism, certain medicines, and stress or breast stimulation shortly before testing, so blood is usually taken fasting and away from breast examination.
