Salpingitis is inflammation of the fallopian tube lining, most often caused by bacteria travelling up from the vagina or cervix, including sexually transmitted infections. It is the tubal component of pelvic inflammatory disease and a leading preventable cause of tubal-factor infertility and ectopic pregnancy in women who have had it. Proper treatment of the underlying infection, and of any partner who needs treatment, reduces the chance of lasting tubal damage. Repeated or untreated episodes carry a higher risk of blockage and hydrosalpinx.
