Time-lapse imaging and other laboratory add-ons

Time-lapse imaging uses a specialised incubator fitted with a camera to take continuous photographs of developing embryos, so the embryology team can review their growth pattern without removing them from stable incubator conditions for manual checks. It is one of several IVF laboratory add-ons sometimes offered for an additional fee alongside standard treatment. Current evidence, including reviews cited by international bodies such as ESHRE, has not consistently shown that time-lapse imaging or other selected laboratory add-ons meaningfully improve the chance of a live birth for most patients, even though they may provide additional information for the embryology team. Where a clinic offers such an add-on, it should explain honestly what is and is not known about its benefit, so you can decide whether the additional cost is right for you.
