Uterine artery embolisation (UAE) is a minimally invasive radiological procedure in which small particles are injected into the arteries supplying the uterus to block blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink over time. It is performed by an interventional radiologist rather than through open or laparoscopic surgery. UAE is an option for some women with symptomatic fibroids who wish to avoid surgery, but it is generally not recommended for women who still wish to have children, because it can affect the blood supply to the uterus and ovaries and has been linked to a higher risk of pregnancy complications compared with myomectomy. Fertility-related decisions about UAE should be made with both a gynaecologist and interventional radiologist involved.
