Vitamin D

A vitamin linked to bone and general health; deficiency is common in India and being studied in fertility.

Lifestyle & preconception

Vitamin D supports bone health and several other body functions, and deficiency is common in India despite ample sunshine, due to factors such as limited sun exposure, skin pigmentation, and dietary intake. Research into vitamin D and fertility outcomes is ongoing, and current evidence does not establish that vitamin D supplementation improves fertility or IVF success on its own. If you are concerned about vitamin D, a blood test can check your level, and your doctor can advise whether supplementation is appropriate for you. Vitamin D should not be taken in place of established preconception steps such as folic acid, and should not be assumed to be a fertility treatment.

Also known as: vitamin D deficiency, 25-OH vitamin D
